zoom zoom zoom

The holiday has been zooming by rather quickly this time round - been busy with some much appreciated work in the form of teaching an English enrichment programme, allowing me to 'enrich' my pockets as well. But somehow after all these teaching stints, I end up wondering if I am ever able to cope with the job as a teacher and be able to educate my students after all. I hope this is due to my lack of pedagogical skills at the moment due to the fact that I have yet to go through those in school, and not some innate quality in me which is hinting me to consider another career path.

Due to that, haven't been hanging out with others as much as I would like, but the money's good, so no more complaints. On Tuesday, my family and I went for a celebratory dinner for my Dad's bday - bought him a digi cam that I kinda wanna get for myself now... I've always had a thing for purchasing cameras (but I always end up buying overpriced ones that fall way beyond expectation in terms of performance). Thanks to my bb who treated everyone to the sumptious dinner at Vienna (still love the food there - it's still as good as ever, especially the Buddha Jumps Over the Wall, the herbal prawns and pepper crab).

On Wednesday, went out with Derence and Wendy to sort of help them in choosing their wedding photos. They look rather adorable in the pictures, with some rather hilarious ones to boot. After the laborious task of selecting the top few pictures for printing, we then went for a much awaited dinner - at Kenny Rogers - yummy! I really missed the food there - the chicken was juicy and tasty, the ribs tender and flavourful, and the mac and cheese totally to die for! I would say that we had a really hearty meal that day. Oh, finally got my chewed up and destroyed bra reinstated. Dan brought me shopping for some, and what a good deal I got! 2 old and destroyed bras for 4 spanking brand new ones! Thankfully, my favourite one which Vodka destroyed quite some time ago was still on sale, albeit with some modifications. Thanks bb! I love you!

And for today, met up with Aisyah, Maz and Liza at Northpoint for some catching up. Quite an interesting place to meet, come to think of it, since we did spend most of our secondary school life there after lessons. Headed to Swensons for some munchies, and tons of chit chat - mostly bitching about the infestation of AT in Singapore nowadays... and how they totally put us off. And as people always do, we talk about our jobs and payments for the house and all as well. Aiks... where did the days when we talked about mindless stuff like boys and more boys go to? The same people at the same place in a different time - and what different conversational topics we've had. Time indeed does change everything. And as it used to be, Aisyah and I went shopping - saw many things that tempted me, but managed to return home with zilch purchases! So proud of myself! =) But then again, this sense of satisfaction will be sated differently tomorrow, when I shall return to purchase one of the items that tempted me today - a pair of Esprit jeans for $34. I think I miss the days where I had to scrimp and save just to buy something, so everything I bought meant so much more to me. So I have pined for it for a night, and I shall return tomorrow to purchase it, and fill the void in me - ah, pure satisfaction!

huskies

There's seriously a problem with Singaporeans and discarding their dogs. I guess they thought that their dogs would be forever the cutesy puppy that they bought from the store. What they fail to notice is that puppies are super adorable when they're young, and despite their tendency to sleep most of the time, making it easier to care for them, they grow up to be frisky and playful, with the need to be walked daily and fed with nutritious food. Plus they need lots of love and attention as well.

I guess the novelty of a new dog dies off when they find out how much hard work is required to take care of them. Cleaning up after them is not a fun thing, especially not after a hard day out and when all you want is to return home to your cosy home to relax, only to find a huge mess all thanks to your dog. Also, imagine waking up to a pile of poop to clear every morning. Then there's the fur in your house. And the mess that he makes with his food and water. And the constant bugging you for attention. Your beloved possessions that he chews up. Your beloved fragile items that he breaks. Having to walk him after a long day. His ability to pee at the wrong place when you have company, or when u are at your busiest. His constant howls and barking. His scratch marks on the doors. His paw prints and scratch marks on the walls. His scratch and bite marks on your skin from an overly excited play session. You'll never have a clean and tidy home with a dog. The amount of money required to groom and feed him. His annoying behaviour of jumping on your visitors.

All these are some of the annoying behaviour that my Vodka engages in. But as much as I harbour thoughts of giving him up because of all these, I know deep in my heart that I wouldn't bare to do so. The amount of joy that we get when we spend time with him, playing with him, watching him do the funniest things - all these far outweigh the cons of having a dog.

Browsing through the Action for Dogs, SPCA and S'pore Pets pages, there's just so many dogs given up for adoption. And out of these, there's just so many Huskies - it's really heartbreaking. I know what the owners go through, but to give up a dog whose spent its entire life with you? Can you imagine the pain and suffering he goes through? To me, it's akin to taking a child away from his parents. Some of the dogs there are just so pitiful - to be given up at 12 years of age, and even those that are given up because of illness or disabilities. That's just sad. Would you give up your child if they suffered from similar unfortunate conditions? Obviously, these owners just didn't think of their dogs as a part of their lives, but rather, as a toy, a plaything. Something they can discard once they get sick of it. FYI, animals, not just dogs, have feelings. They too feel pain, happiness and sorrow. And all thanks to movies that portray dogs in unrealistic behaviour - people end up getting dogs with the impression that they'd end up with the perfect dog that they see in the movies. People getting Collies after watching Lassie, Huskies after 8 Below. It's just really sad how movies impact people and contort their thoughts, impressions, and influence their behaviour.

If you happen to be thinking of getting a dog, please think twice, thrice, plenty of times. Just make sure you can provide the best for your dog before jumping on the bandwagon. I'm not trying to put people off from getting a dog, but just advocating proactive and responsible pet care.

On another note, as I was looking through some adoption sites, I came across a rather perculiar mix that caught my attention - Husky Retriever mix. So I went and searched for pictures of a dog of such heritage; here's what I got:

With the fur and ears of a retriever but the markings and face of a husky. Such an interesting mix!

missing stupid

Me: Damn I smell like Sheryl. I thought the car wouldn't smell like her after so long.

Hakim: Maybe ZJ misses her so much he sprayed her perfume in the car. Or maybe she left some stale clothes in her car.

Me: Yeah, I think the last suggestion is very plausible. It's funny how we can make fun of her when she's in another continent.

Hakim: I guess we really miss her stupidity.

Yes, we miss your stupidity! Come back soon, stupidthingy!

On another note, was looking at this video from my friend, about trains in China. Just when I thought the MRT squeezing was bad enough, watching the video totally disgusted me. Just to get more people in the train, the people working at the train stations had to manually stuff the people into the trains when it's obvious that they won't fit in. And the result? A super packed sardine can of people. Man, imagine the smells and sweat u'll feel of the people around u. EWWW!

mahjong3

Played mahjong again today and made 2 mistakes yet again. Aiks - what's with me committing 2 mistakes everytime?

Feeling rather lethargic and unmotivated to do anything recently. Haiz - what's my purpose? What do I want? I feel lost again.

mahjong 2

Returned from another night 'training' session at Eric's. This time, I made 2 mistakes again, but I did manage to win about $22. First time I've ever won that much really, but we weren't playing money so I don't think that counts, esp since most of them were trying to game on bigger suits. The first mistake today is that I threw out a tile that would have made me money. I had 4 of a kind, but I threw the tile out instead. Ok, that's 1. The next was that I held on to the wrong tile that resulted in me missing out on winning a game. That was really dumb of me actually. I think I really must learn to focus and to do so faster as well. I guess that's why I need more 'training'.

On another note, walked Vodka to Dan's work place today. Surprisingly, though it was a walk to Bt Timah, it took me less than an hour. And I was walking at a rather leisurely pace. I realised that if I was still studying in NP, I could have actually walked to sch from my place - it'd prob take me about an hour, seeing how it's rather close from his work place. Too bad now I'm at NTU, the super off location which would take me more than an hour to reach by foot - prob 2 in fact. Tried walking to Boon Lay with Vodka once, but got tired within less than half of the journey. Yes, that's how far it is. Imagine if I had tried to walk to Jalan freaking Bahar - I think I'd give up and take a cab there instead. But I think it would be interesting to try that. Hiking trip by the expressway. The drain by the PIE actually had a lot of interestingly beautiful colourful fish in it, as well as some rather big ones as well. It was almost like a walk to explore nature. Love the mansionates beside the drain as well, cos it seemed so peaceful to walk past the area, and I've always loved the idea of staying in a house with 2 storeys. It was always a dream of mine cos I have this thing for spiral staircases in the house. Just makes a house seem more majestic.

Anyways, met this lovable 9-year-old Retriever cum Samoyd mix. Super beautiful - imagine a white retriever with a beatifully soft coat and ears of a samoyd. Plus, she acted nothing like how I imagine a 9-year-old dog would. She seemed more like a puppy to me, actually. She was playful, yet afraid of Vodka, that she would whine for him when he was in sight but away from reach, but growl and bare her teeth and bark at him when he got too close for comfort. Like the owner said, typical of a girl - just doesn't know what she wants. But she's really adorable and at ease around humans, and according to the owner, totally at ease with other dogs as well, esp those smaller than her. Maybe she has a thing against big dogs - or dogs bigger than her. Or maybe Vodka just isn't handsome enough, as Dan suggests.

On our way back, we saw this huge German in one of the houses. It was probably twice the size of Vodka. Then, as we moved on, we saw something even larger - a full grown rottweiler. Super huge! It was taller than the owner's waist level, and it's head was comparable, if not bigger than its owner's. Imagine that. I think if it managed to get a bite of Vodka, it'd prob be able to chomp off his head. Or prob an entire jack russel. Aiks. All of a sudden, I remember what Dan once suggested - if we ever manage to stay in a bungalow, we'll just get a rottweiler and a german - the perfect security system. These are 2 dogs that no one would dare approach and pet for fear of losing their hands. Yikes.

Mahjong

Just returned from a game at Eric's place. Lost $28+... gee... but did manage to finish off with some nice tiles. Luckily we weren't playing money, cos the main reason why I lost so much was cos I 'za hu'. Meaning, I gamed when I shouldn't and couldn't. Aiks... not the first time I've done that... but in that round, I lost about $15. Oppsy... Totally blur today... cos I even missed out on a chance to game. I had actually gotten all the tiles to end, but I thought I was still waiting for another tile, so I discarded the winning tile, and resulted in Welling winning. Gee... I must really practice more often.

Anyways, been lazing around watching Naruto. Ninjas are so cool. bleh. Went to Pastamania for dinner - the 3rd time this month. I don't think I've been to Pastamania as much in my previous visits compared to the frequency this month. Need to budget already. Can't afford to eat all the good stuff all the time. Ok, on to more Naruta and fattening snacks. I think I'm soooo gonna come back with a spare tyre. All the better if I happen to be forced into taking swimming next sem. So I can float better. Aiks...

Soup & Satay

Went to this cafe near Dan's workplace for dinner yesterday. The satay there was superb! Meaty and juicy, but not oily. Plus, cooked to perfection! The sauce of course was wonderful as well, for what is good satay without great sauce? Besides that, I totally love the Blackforest Milkshake as well. Creamy and sooooo tasty... it's basically chocolate shake with bits of chocolate and cherry in it. Chocolaty, milky with a tinge of cherry fragrance - I highli recommend it! The entire meal came to about $30 though - we had 20 sticks of satay with 2 ketupats, as well as oxtail soup and tauhu goreng, I think. Forgot the last dish. Dan had this chendol drink as well. Definitely more pricey than normal mamaks, but with a lovely atmosphere that makes you feel like you're dining in someone's home. Also, minus the smokiness in other places that sell satay. I think I'd definitely go back for more satay and the yummy shake.

Sleepless in Singapore

Am supposed to be sound asleep by now, considering how I intended to hit the sack at 9pm earlier tonight, and how I only slept at 5am yesterday. Yet, I've decided to spend my time doing up a new blog skin and arranging files in my computer, resulting in a very stiff neck and shoulders. Aiks...

To those who are overseas right now, and those going overseas, enjoy yourselves peeps! Seize the hols!

I've placed a slideshow in my blog, featuring pictures from years back. Looking at the pictures kinda made me feel rather happy - made me think of the fun times I had with friends and kin, and makes me look forward to more fun ahead.

Oh, congrats to Eric and Wellin on their incoming bundle of joy. Yet another pregnant friend of mine this year. Dan's the only one left in the MU band of bros right now without a pregnant wife. And yes, I've had enough of the incessant bombardment of 'when's your turn?' questions. I think I'll plan it so that my maternity leave doesn't clash with the school holidays - that's all the planning I have at the moment.

Shopping Spree!

Yes, shopping is sooo fun, and should be a recognised form of therapy. Went for some entertainment and shopping for below $100 today. Was totally in singing and shopping form and mood today, so although I'm super tired out from the long day out today, I'm super glad cos I managed to snag a lot of good buys.

First up, entertainment today was in the form of Kbox singing session. Despite the rather disappointing lunch provided, I still had fun with Wellin, cos when u have 3 hours and only 2 people, you tend to sing to your heart's content.

Then shopping! Almost every shop seemed to be having sales, so good stuff were going at low prices - my favourite combination. So, spending $64 today, I managed to buy 3 pairs of socks, 2 dresses, one pair of shoes and a little gift for Mindy. A steal, I'd say, especially since the dresses were at $12 each!! But I think my card needs a rest for now, after all the hard work it's been through, as much as I need one too.

Sicky Sicky

Felt under the weather yesterday - prob due to the super cold aircon I was exposed to yesterday no matter where we went... resulted in shivering in the MRT on our way back home. Turns out I was having a fever. But all thanks to Xu Yong and Wellin's old school remedy, I'm all well now! Had to down a cup of rather yucky tea and wrap myself in the blanket to force myself to sweat. And it was so freaking hot! Ended up waking up within half and hour, sweltering like a pig in a blanket. Couldn't really sleep after that so decided to go out and watch TV. Happened to catch the second half of the Chealsea vs Newcastle match, and I must say that Chealsea played superbly! Their passing was wonderfully accurate and their advances were rather undeniable. Defence was amazingly impenetrable as well. Can't wait for Euro to start though... miss watching Germany play, and other teams too, although it's quite sad that Portugal no longer has Figo and France no longer has Zidane. Darn... there goes 2 less hotties to watch...

Oh, I woke up to a cat meowing loudly this morning, at 6am. I was sleeping in the living room cos I wanted to watch tv, so anyways, I turned round and saw a cat's tail swaying at the window. When I grabbed my spects to have a better look, the cat scampered off so I thought nothing of it. So I went back to sleep. Then a few minutes later, I heard the cat meowing again, and this time, it actually jumped through the window and into the living room! So I was so shocked by it that I scampered off the sofa and grabbed my spects, finding myself faced with this gray cat in my living room. Luckily, Vodka was sleeping in the room with Dan, otherwise, I think the cat would have been scared shitless. Anyways, I walked towards the cat and it was kinda scared, so it backed off, though it was still meowing, at me. Then I just opened the main door and off it scampered through my metal gate. I think it somehow managed to jump onto the ledge outside my window and was too afraid to jump off, so it decided to jump into my house instead to find a way to get down.

After that, I just went back to sleep. And at about 8.30am, I got rudely awakened again, this time because I felt something pounce on me! I was so shocked I jumped right awake, and have been awake since. Guess what landed on me?? If you guessed it was the gray cat, you're sooooooooo wrong! Haha... Dan came out to give me a hug before he left for work. But he did scare me awake.

Well, we went over to see Hashim's son, Rayyen. He's so cute and so tiny, but with so much soft hair! Couldn't keep my hands off his hair. Haha... well, there's the first baby of our class.

Fishy Therapy and Dry Swimming

Went to Chinatown yesterday and had fish therapy + a detox session. It's really quite worth it, although the detox session resulted in us soaking our feet in super disgusting brownish water that actually emnated from within us, so ewww... But the fish therapy thingy was fun - ticklish at first especially when they started nibbling under the soles of our feet. And at $13 per half hour, that was quite a deal. But coupled with the detox session, also lasting half an hour, the entire session only cost us $20. It was quite an experience actually - we ended up feeling refreshed and with fairer and smoother feet.

By the way folks, Dan's dad will be opening an eatery stall (economic rice) in the old Chinatown market, so do patronise it when you can. I'll prob be going down to help him out in the June hols, so if u do want to pop by for some munchies, don't forget to drop by!

So after the fish therapy, we went over to Bedok for some doggie therapy. First up, Nicholl, Wellin's adorably manja poodle. Then went over to Amanda's place for the next doggie - Chip - who was rather afraid of us cos I think I scared him when I picked him up immediately at the door and tried to fling him up in the air. He got so scared that he kept hiding under the table, away from me. But he warmed up later and became adorable pup that kept scrambling around the house while we played mahjong - the noobs at one table, and the pros at the other. It was quite interesting - that's the closest that I've ever gotten to playing mahjong in a 'gambling den' setting. But then again, the noobs table wasn't playing with money, so yeah...

Supper was provided by the oh-so-kind-and-oh-so-adorable Sheryl. Well, not really provided but she did go out and help us purchase the food anyways - in the form of carrot cake. Apparently she had such a hard time ordering it in her half-pass Mandarin skills that the Chinese national working there had no idea what she wanted, till she pointed the picture of the dish. Tsk tsk... another amazing feat by our dear Sheryl. Oh, and this adorable girl still insists on the existence of the TRUE story of Gullimard's Travels... aiks! I never knew there was a local version of the famous Swift's novel, Gulliver's Travels.

Zoo and Prawning

Labour day was a busy busy day... As usual, Dan and I went to the zoo and there were sooooo many people there! Many may wonder why on earth would we want to visit the zoo annually - that weren't we sick of the animals there? Actually, there's always something new whenever we visit... it's rather amazing really, and quite interesting for us as well, to see how it has changed.

In the spirit of the late Steve Irwin

Come on Hippo! Drink up!

Yes, a nice pic of a warthog taking a piss

Frisky monkeys... tsk tsk...

One of my fav animals at the zoo - the mongoose/mongeese?/mongooses?

Dan says that this monkey looks like Andy Lau... look at his super cool expression!

An emo monkey sitting alone on the field

The muslim Orang Utan who insists on wearing the 'tudong'

A sweet moment between these 2 orang utans... the male orang utan is cupping the female's face in his hand and moving in for a peck! And they did this without any keepers around instructing them!

My giant teddy!

This here is the oldest creature in the S'pore zoo... at 70+ years old... meet Astove...

Obviously I've lost out in the battle of who has the bigger mouth...

Wow... look at that!

Doesn't the face of this bat look like Vodka?

It took the two of us to take this pic... Danny had to piggyback me whilst I took this pic...

Hmmm... it's looking rather gloomy...

Teasing the monkey for its small ding dong...

Dan with the shed snake skin that he found

Intimidating when the king of the jungle locks his gaze on you

Ewww pls dun fart Rhinos...

After the zoo, we went Ikea for a short shopping trip and chit chat session on the display furniture. I guess the showrooms there are so well made that we actually take them as places to chill and chit chat...

Anyways, went for dinner at ECP after that and had our fav salted veg duck soup, and chicken wings, where someone insisted that she only eats the wing when she was chomping on the DRUMLET.

Went prawning after that where we caught about 10 in total, but ended up with 50 to BBQ... all thanks to the kind uncles there who donated their prawns (some super gigantic ones as well) to us. Yummy yummy feast after that man!
