the promise
One of the most highly acclaimed movies of this year - The Promise. A humongous budget, a total of 6 prominent characters (excluding the 23,000 strong army), and as an entry film for an international film fest.
Though highly-regarded, critics have been brutal about it, slaying it with reviews of merely 2 out of 5. Having watched the movie myself, I must say, that although it had amazing CG effects, some great music, and some wonderful scenes with cool camera shots, the story was just, well, dumb. Perhaps it's supposed to be an arty-farty film and common viewers like myself miss the point of it all. But come on, the whole basis of the story is crappy. A feud that began since childhood? Something so unforgivable committed by an innocent child? And what does it all have to do with the goddess? It all just went downhill at the end. What's supposedly a climatic ending with twists and turns turned out to be something just laughable and totally head-scratching. The story is just too far-fetched, too unrealistic, too fantasy-based. The good side of the film, though, was the great scene work. Some wonderful shots in there made the film so watchable. Plus, the great fight scenes and scenery makes it more pleasurable. Also commendable is Nicholas Tse's acting - as a bitter, effeminate villain whom you love to detest. So cool, yet so girly at the same time. Where can you ever find such a character? The only character I've seen with similar traits was Zhang He in the PS2 game, Dynasty Warriors. Oh, the costumes for the show were soooooo pretty too! So flowy and light for the females, and the armour for the warrior, nice. Nicholas Tse's character's costume was nice as well, with his weapons and all. The only bad thing in the costume department? Getting the warrior to wear the same clothes, a couple outfit, with the beauty in the show. The outfit? It's a flowy, long, dress-like, pyjamas-like outfit. Looks wonderful on the beauty, played by real-time beauty Cecilia Cheung, but looks like a joke on the warrior. Well, all in all it's not that bad... as long as you don't mind anti-climatic endings. Oh, thanks bb for the pink rose. It's soooo pretty! So sweet of you! Muacks! |
